Getting above tree line in the White Mountains of New Hampshire takes a lot of work, generally two to three hours of solid climbing, always ending with picking one's way over rocks all seemingly turned edge up. Yet the exhilaration of reaching the top of a treeless ridge, with nothing but chains of peaks as far as you can see, does more than just redeem the effort: it restores the soul. It's easy to understand why the ancients imagined that God lived in the mountains.
